Jerome Zanchius (1516-1590) is one of the great names of Reformed theology alongside Peter Martyr, John Calvin, and Theodore Beza. Jonathan Edwards referred to him as “the best of Protestant writers in his judgment.” John Farthing claimed that Zanchius “lived and breathed in dialogue with scripture.” The hymnist, Augustus Toplady (and original English publisher of this work), said Zanchius’s work was “from beginning to end, a regular chain of solid argument: deduced from the unerring word of divine revelation, and confirmed by the co-incident testimonies of some of the greatest lights that ever shone in the Christian church.” Not only have Reformed scholars of the past been assisted by this volume, the modern reader will benefit from this classic statement of the biblical doctrine of predestination as well. This book is thoughtful, balanced, and biblical. Absolute Predestination remains a helpful explanation of the Reformed doctrine of election and reprobation. This book is not milk for babes; it is meat for grown men and women. But it is good meat; nutritious, wholesome, spiritual food for the soul. After reading it, you will see the clear teachings of Scripture on election and reprobation.

As a new convert, about 1971, in a full living room, I heard Brother Murrell give these Ruth sermons. The truths he brought out were beautiful, sweet, precious, and helpful. There was a sense of holy quietness and of wonderment – what intricacies in the good word of God. To my thinking this commentary on the book of Ruth is the “finest of wheat” (Psa. 81:16), pure water from the “wells of salvation” (Isa. 12:3), a history of humanity, the story of redemption, a reminder of the plight of man and the way of escape, a consolation regarding divine providence, and good news about a wonderful Savior. Hail sovereign love! Gather this “wisdom from above” – better than gold.
– Bob Jennings, Highway M Chapel, Sedalia, MO

Conrad Murrell has set his unique strength of mind and fervency of heart into mining out the treasures beneath the surface of the book of Ruth. You will be enriched and blessed as you sort through these treasures.
–Don Johnson, Grace Baptist Church, Batesville, AR

While the Book of Ruth historically bridges the judges with the rise of the kingship of David, it’s real value is found in the redemptive love between Christ as our Kinsmen redeemer and his dispossessed bride. Conrad Murrell brings these themes out in this book with great gospel clarity and conviction. Having known the author for close to 35 years as my father in the faith and a fellow worker in the field, this book yields many sheaves from those labors. Christ-honoring and soul-satisfying, the book is a real spiritual feast for those in a famine land!
–Mark LaCour, Grace Bible Fellowship, Baton Rouge, LA

The sermons from the book of Ruth that make up this present volume take us all the way from the doctrines of God and man, through the fall, to the doctrines of redemption and final rest in Christ. These sermons have a special place in my heart for several reasons. It was while listening to them many years ago that my wife was converted, while still a student in college. I myself was also greatly blessed by them. I remember particularly Brother Murrell’s exhortation not to “settle for less than Boaz” by “going after the young men.” At the time, I had begun to give more attention to the study of theology than to the Lord Himself, and this warning steered me in the right direction. May the Lord use this book to convert, strengthen, warn, and edify many others in the days ahead!
– Charles Leiter, Lake Road Chapel, Kirksville, MO

I well remember in the early 1980′s when Conrad Murrell came to our church in Denton, Texas. He came a number of times during those years, but one of the most memorable series of meetings he ever preached was when he taught through the book of Ruth. The Ruth series was as rich and as edifying as anything our church ever heard. The reality of the gospel that came through the book of Ruth was a deep well of truth for our church at that time. I could hardly believe how a man could bring forth such riches of the gospel from an Old Testament book that had long been neglected. The book of Ruth came alive to our entire church through the ministry of brother Murrell. Now thirty years later, I am delighted that Conrad’s messages in Ruth are now in print for the benefit of many. I warmly recommend this book to all who will read and profit from it.

“In one way or another, virtually every troubling trend in the current world of evangelical Christianity is rooted in misunderstanding about the church. What is her proper mission? What is her role in an increasingly secular culture? What should her priorities be? How should a local church function? Why is church membership necessary? or is it? What is the basis for true unity? This excellent book shines the clear light of Scripture on those and many other questions. Since Christ loved the church enough to die for her, every believer ought to share that passion. Jeffrey Johnson clearly does, and I believe you will find his enthusiasm contagious.”

- JOHN MACARTHUR, Pastor/Teacherof Grace Community Church in Sun Valley,California and President of The Master’s College and Seminary

“Like a carpenter refinishing a classic piece of furniture, Jeffrey Johnson strips away layers of human tradition and worldly-wise philosophy to restore our view of the church to its biblical simplicity. In this book the church shines! Johnson offers basic teaching on the purposes, worship, membership, and leadership of the church from a Baptist perspective. As a Reformed Christian I found especially valuable his emphasis on the holiness of the church and its worship as ordained by God’s holy Word and lived out in His holy presence.”

“In a day where many worship at the altar of pragmatism, the church is in dire need of a Biblical view of herself and her purpose. Pastor Jeff Johnson offers a concise, sobering, and eye-opening message for a generation in need of ecclesiological reformation. Johnson addresses the issues we face today, and roots them in their historical/theological context. Jeff reminds us that the deep, abiding truths of Scripture are sufficient to sustain the bride of Christ in every age.”

“I am glad to recommend this new book by Jeffery Johnson, which confronts such ignorance in a very clear and Biblical manner. The book is very brief and direct and even applicable and necessary, especially for our day. The book covers almost every aspect of what a church is and what it should and should not be doing, according to the Scriptures. It can be used by the individual pastor or Christian to learn his duty to his church, or it can be the foundation of a series of sermons to enlighten a church in these areas, or it can be used as Sunday School material or in individual classes or Bible studies. If readers say they already have such books, I would tell you I do too. But every age is different, as it seems our churches slip further and further away from Biblical truth, in the passing of time, and they lean more and more towards the use of the latest unbiblical methods and thoughts of church ministry and church life. Here is a book which deals with the modern age in which we live, and the weakness of the church and churches of our day, and without fear the author sets forth Biblical truth as to what the church of our Lord Jesus Christ needs to be today according to Scripture!”

- DR. RICHARD P. BELCHER, Author of ‘A Journey in Grace’

“Every pastor of every free church in every generation has the incredible responsibility to preserve the public worship of God and continually guard it from the contamination of men’s devices and imaginations. This practical book will help them! Writing as a pastor working on the front lines every day, Jeffrey Johnson boldly confronts and questions popular contemporary worship practices, urges us to reform our worship unto the beauty of God’s awesome holiness, and exhorts us to restore prayer and preaching to their biblically-mandated prominence in our meetings. I especially recommend this to young pastors and those in seminary who someday may shepherd a church.”

“This little book of Jeffrey Johnson has a loving and exalted view of the church of Jesus Christ, but it is also aware of its tensions and imperfections as congregations having to live in a fallen world under the holy requirements of the Head of the Church. This book will help you to understand the life of the church, its duties and blessings and it will encourage you to give your years to serving and strengthening the people of God.”

- GEOFF THOMAS, Pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales

“With refreshing vigour and stimulating simplicity, Jeffrey Johnson gives us a sinewy outline of Scriptural principles for the nature and life of Christ’s church. It is brief enough to be a useful introduction but deep enough to prompt careful thought and promote earnest practice. This little book is a fine antidote to shallow, casual, lukewarm attitudes to God’s household, putting in place a legitimately high conception of the people of the living God working out their holy purposes in the presence of the living God.”

- JEREMY WALKER, Pastor of Maidenbower Baptist Church, Crawley, England, coauthor of ‘A Portrait of Paul’

“The idea of church membership today is either an assumption that has never been challenged or considered biblically, or else abandoned by new church starts as a useless relic of the past that is irrelevant for churches and Christians now. We can be thankful that there are pastors such as Jeffrey Johnson who address this issue from a biblical perspective and demonstrate the importance of meaningful membership in a local church by Christians today.”

- DON WHITNEY, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

“Jeffrey Johnson provides a big picture view of what the church is about without clutter or confusion. In understandable, straightforward chapters, the nature and practice of church life is explained so that even the newest of believers may comprehend. He has not tried to be innovative, but faithful to the Bible in his presentation. Among its uses, try it with those who are new to church life and need an explanation in lucid, accessible language.”

Did the multitude of Biblical scribes who copied the Scriptures by hand throughout the centuries do so with absolute perfection? If not, how can we know that what we now possess is (word for word) what was originally penned by the Biblical authors themselves? ‘Behind the Bible’ spotlights the divine preservation of Scripture to show that it is not by chance God’s Word ‘will never pass away.’

“Jeff Johnson has provided a helpful and clear discussion of the key issues behind the ‘whys’ and ‘wherefores’ of how we got our New Testament text. In light of the frontal assaults upon the integrity of the text of the New Testament pervasive in our day, it is important for believers to have a knowledge of these matters, and Johnson’s work is a useful addition to the introductions available on the subject.” – James R. White, author of Pulpit Crimes
“One of the most difficult areas of Biblical study is the matter of textual criticism. Obviously, this is not something which can be done with perfection, but Jeffrey Johnson has in this book, ‘Behind the Bible’, shown not only how it is done, but also that it can, when done properly, arrive with a great certainty of the original Biblical text. This book, because of its clarity and helpfulness in the area of textual criticism, is a must read for all pastors and students of the Bible in our day!” – Dr. Richard P.

We face decisions every day–some big, some small. As Christians, we seek to submit the choices we make to God’s will. Unfortunately, for many the process of discerning God’s will has become fraught with fear and confusion, leading to such questions as: Does God guide? If so, how? How will I know when he does? What if I make a mistake?

J. I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom seek to free us from such fear. Beginning with an exploration of Psalm 23, they show that in his covenant role as our Good Shepherd, God has promised to both guide and guard us, his sheep. We need not doubt that he will lovingly grant the guidance we need as we seek him. And we can take comfort that just as a shepherd retrieves and redirects sheep that go off course, he will do the same for us.

In this rich study of divine guidance, Packer and Nystrom show the importance of cultivating a lifestyle of Bible-based wisdom and discernment. And they take seriously the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding his people, neither downplaying the supernatural element of divine guidance nor elevating it beyond our reach to the level of the “super-spiritual,” or worse, the superstitious.

What does it mean to be “saved by grace”?

‘Putting Amazing Back into Grace’ reminds you of the Reformation’s radical view of God and his saving grace, the liberating yet humbling truth that we contribute nothing to our salvation. It lays out the scriptural basis for this important doctrine and the implications of this message for a vibrant evangelical faith.

Michael Horton’s accessible treatment of who does what in salvation will inspire you with a fresh amazement at God’s grace.

Endorsements

“With all our technological expertise and intellectual arrogance, we have become the cleverest fools in world history. Mike Horton has seen through all the excuses and appreciates that true and timeless wisdom is found in the paths of the Christian gospel. Putting Amazing Back into Grace expresses the thrill of his soul–and mine–as we gaze upon the triumph of God’s almighty grace.”–from the foreword by J. I. Packer

“This book contains much biblical wisdom and is a welcome antidote to the cultural Christianity that has infiltrated even evangelical circles.”–Donald G. Bloesch

“Michael Horton calls us away from the trivial to the foundational, from contemporary myopia to biblical clear-sightedness. He provides a fresh, stimulating introduction to what we should mean when we say ‘saved by grace.’”–W. Robert Godfrey

Michael Horton (PhD, University of Coventry and Wycliffe Hall, Oxford) is J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary California.

Mary Bunyan: A Tale of Religious Persecution and Heroic Faith

by Sallie Rochester Ford

One of our finest historical fictions: the stirring story of Mary Bunyan. An outstanding gift book for that eager reader in the family, with a beautiful new cover.

It’s the deeply moving story of the home life of Mary, blind daughter of the John Bunyan family, and her devotion to her father. Mary sought to visit her father and meet any needs of his that she could, even while he was in prison; and worked to bring about his freedom. A convicting and challenging story of faith standing firm despite massive opposition from men.

As John, the pastor, languished in prison as a result of his preaching as a Baptist pastor in England during the 17th century. The account is historical fiction, told largely from the vantage point of his blind daughter, Mary, his first-born child and constant joy.

Mary became Bunyan’s loyal, constant companion on every occasion when the authorities would permit her to visit her father at the prison, and his persistent petitioner for mercy and release before King Charles. This stirring account of how a young girl’s faith in God grew, rather than diminished, during times of persecution, is an inspiring and beautiful example for all believers today.

The true story and the only biography in print of one of the forgotten heroes of history, particularly of the Great Reformation. This principled and righteous king, and famed general, is a model Christian for young men in many respects.

“One of the most important men in the history of the Reformation. His deep conviction and determination to see truth triumph cost him his life; but in losing it, he delivered nations…” (Tom Nettles). Great family reading or a book for anyone interested in godly military heroes.

From his boyhood, the grace of God formed in him skills and character with which he was destined to serve the interests of the kingdom of God. With the armies of Sweden at his command, he set out to preserve the freedom to preach the Word of God in Europe, resisting those who would have stamped out the truth of the Reformation. Even in the victories of his conquest, his character as a man of faith shone, as one of the mighty who nonetheless loved mercy in regard to even his enemies, and who said to his friends, “All that God has given me, I have given you without reserve, nor do I demand anything of you in return.”

The Fatal Flaw exposes the inconsistencies of the theology behind infant baptism. Rather than rehashing the familiar arguments against infant baptism, this work seeks to undercut its very foundation. What is the theological system which under girds infant baptism and where does this system come unraveled? This work answers these questions by explaining the distinction in the nature of the old and new covenants and their often misunderstood relationship with one another. This critical discussion of the continuity and discontinuity of the covenants is thoroughly explored in this book. To understand the biblical connection between the covenants, it is vital to first understand the dual nature of the Abrahamic Covenant. What is the relationship between Abraham and Moses, Abraham and Christ, and Moses and Christ? The debate of continuity and discontinuity between the old and new covenants cannot be properly solved until the intended nature of the Abrahamic Covenant is fully comprehended.
